Changes: The Librarian

The Librarian is a minor antagonist from Monsters University. She runs the Monsters University library and is a huge, gray, slug-like monster with huge tentacles, waiting to grab noisy students. Her eyesight may be failing, but she can smell and hear a student a mile away. Whenever the librarian hears one, she grabs them in her tentacles and tosses them out of the library.

Monsters University

The Librarian appears in the scene where Mike, Sulley, and the Oozma Kappa fraternity pass the second test of the Scare Games in which they have to avoid getting caught by the Librarian. The Librarian looks up from her desk and whispers, "Shhh...Quiet," then turns to a book she is reading. Terri scoffs, "What's so scary about a little old librarian?"

A student steps out onto the floorboards, which squeak loudly. The Librarian rises up from her seat, lashes out with one tentacle, and nabs the student. She brings him to her giant wrinkled face and hisses, "I said, QUIET!" Then she throws him out of the library through the roof and he falls into a lake.

Mike, Sulley, and the Oozma Kappa realize they have to creep through the library slowly and steadily and, for their test, grab the Oozma Kappa banner. They almost succeed until Sulley prepares to grab the flag at the top of a ladder until it crashes down, grabbing the Librarian's attention. She charges toward Sulley like a tentacled rhinoceros and just as she's about to capture him, Mike and the Oozma Kappa friends make noise and distract her, leading her in the wrong direction.

The Librarian chases after the friends and they manage to jump through the door, out of the reach of the Librarian's tentacles. So using misdirection, Scott "Squishy" Squibbles has managed to unexpectedly nab the flag. Slugma Slugma Kappa, another fraternity, gets captured and tossed out of the Library.

Trivia

The Librarian has similarities to the Pale Man from Pan's Labyrinth. Both of them are slightly blind and lie in wait to capture people who enter their domain (in the Librarian's case, the library; in the Pale Man's case, an ancient hallway). The protagonist has to sneak past them and grab an object. But the Librarian captures noisy students and throws them out, whereas the Pale Man devours unsuspecting children.
Disney fans have compared her to Ursula from The Little Mermaid.
