They usually don't appear in the Sing Along Songs, but two videos, Disneyland Fun and Let's Go to Disneyland Paris, featuring them were released. In Disneyland Fun, the song "Grim Grinning Ghosts" was set to take place in the Haunted Mansion, but it was outside the house. The villains were the Evil Queen, the Big Bad Wolf, Captain Hook, and Maleficent. Plus, there are 4 scary trees in that song. In Let's Go to Disneyland Paris, the phantom hypnotizes the audience and then releases the trees. He runs, trying to get to the manor, but he de-hypnotizes the audience then vanishes. the Old Hag came first to take a look at the camera, then appears to hand the apple to the audience but instead takes it away and starts chuckling. Next comes Maleficent, who is dancing with the trees but gets scared away by Donald Duck, who was dressed as a ghost. Maleficent grabs the Old Hag and goes to the manor, along with the trees. As they enter the manor, they see Jafar and Iago. This makes them want to turn back, but they couldn't so they return to pass through the trees, trying to see what is on other side. But then comes the Big Bad Wolf, who scares all of them. The villains get to the house and see the phantom and his daughter, Melanie. When they see the phantom and Melanie, the villains hide. The phantom and Melanie return to the house, and the villains go to hide again. The ghost vanishes, and the villains disappear. The trees remain the same. The gates close.

Set during a Halloween party, Jafar, Cruella de Vil, Captain Hook, Ursula and Hades take over the house with a musical number of "It's Our House Now!", and all the other villains in the house join in. In the process, they trap all the heroes in the kitchen, throw Mickey and the others out into the street, and change the House's name to the "House of Villains". Mickey, Donald, Goofy and Minnie in turn try to return things to normal, but Chernabog keeps throwing them out. Afterwards, Mickey dresses in his famous sorcerer outfit from Fantasia and challenges Jafar to a magical duel using fireballs. Mickey's sorcerer hat is bounced off and there is very little time to put it back on, but then Aladdin saves the day by escaping the kitchen to the backstage room on the magic carpet and giving Daisy who gives Mickey the lamp to trap Jafar. Mickey sucks Jafar into the lamp, while the rest of the villains flee, restoring the house to normal.

* The Evil Queen: In the show, the evil queen is named Regina and she was the daughter of a wealthy witch named Cora who forced her into an arranged marriage with the king of the land. Regina however only wanted to marry her true-love who was a poor stableboy named Daniel. However, the king's child daughter Snow White saw Daniel and Regina together and despite Snow promising Regina that she wouldn't tell anyone, she told Regina's mother. Cora wound up murdering Daniel in front of Regina by using magic to tear his heart out of his chest and this subsequently prompted Regina to become obsessed with exacting revenge on both her mother and Snow White. Following the events, Regina found a way to summon the Dark One who trained her mother in order to persuade him to teach her black magic she became his star pupil, eventually becoming powerful enough to imprison her mother in another realm. As queen, Regina spent years playing the part of a loving wife before having her husband the king murdered, leaving her as ruler of the kingdom. As a monarch, Regina was a brutal and tyrannical leader prompting the citizens of the kingdom to deem her "The Evil Queen". Realizing her life was in danger, Snow White fled her home and became an outlaw prompting Regina to deem her the most wanted criminal in the kingdom and after years of hunting her down, managed to blackmail her into consuming a cursed apple which would trap her in a hellish sleep dimension for eternity by threatening the life of her love the Prince. Snow was however awoken by true loves kiss and Regina was subsequently overthrown and banished. Regina however got her revenge by placing a curse on the kingdom that transported it's inhabitants to the realm without magic where their memories were replaced with fake ones and they were all unknowingly trapped in the timeless town of Storybrooke in which Regina was mayor. In the town Regina adopted a baby named Henry who she cared for more than anything and prompted her to learn to become a better person, even after she learned that he was the abandoned biological son of Snow White's daughter who grew to become her greatest rival and closest friend as she tried to redeem and improve herself.

* Captain Hook: In Once Upon a Time, Captain Hook is the alias of a pirate captain named Killian Jones who originally served as a Navy Officer alongside his brother. On one mission, the two brothers were sent to the alternate realm of Neverland in order to retrieve a plant which the king claimed would cure all illnesses and heal all wound. On the island however, Killian's brother used the herb on himself only to discover that it was a lethal poison which the king intended to use for warfare. After Killian's brother died, he chose to renounce his king and become a pirate, convincing his crew to do the same. As a pirate, he fell in love with a woman named Milah who was trapped in an unhappy marriage with a cowardly peasant named Rumplestiltskin of whom she had a child with. Killian and Milah ran away together only to be find themselves confronted by Milah's husband several years later who over the time they were gone, had learned black magic and became known as the Dark One. Believing that Killian had killed Milah, the all powerful Rumplestiltskin challenged the Captain to a duel, only for the battle to be interrupted by Milah to confessed to Rumple that she left with Killian willingly because of how much she hated Rumple. Enraged by the knowledge that Milah willingly abandoned her own child, Rumple ripped her heart out of her chest and crushed it, killing her in front of Killian. Killian tried to kill Rumple and avenge his wife only for Rumple to cut his hand off, deciding that it was better to let the thirst for vengeance to torment the pirate rather than kill him there and then. Following the incident, Killian replaced his severed hand with a metal hook and dedicated his existence to finding a way to kill the quasi-immortal Rumplestiltskin and having his crew return to Neverland so that they could plot how to kill the Dark One without aging.

* The Big Bad Wolf/The Wolf: In Once Upon a Time, the characters of the Big Bad Wolf, the Wolf from Peter and the Wolf, and Little Red Riding Hood are all combined into one character. This version of the character is named Redd Lucas and was the daughter of the leader of a pack of werewolves but she was hidden away from her mother by her grandmother who was a werewolf cured of her curse. Red's grandmother didn't trust the child to be raised by her mother knowing that she was evil and so she moved to a snowy forest village to raise Red and acquired an enchanted red cloak which would prevent Red from transforming into a werewolf whenever she wore it. Granny never told Red that she was a werewolf or that her mother was still alive and she refused to let Red leave the cottage at night or remove her Red Cloak during nighttime. During Red's teenaged years, Red's transformations became more out of control and she began unknowingly terrorizing the town at night in wolf form, killing a hunter named Amos Slade and his dog Copper. Throughout the days that followed, Red began to believe that the werewolf was actually her boyfriend Peter because she noticed wolf prints in the snow outside her house which slowly transform into human prints on one of the nights that Peter spent the night with her. After telling Peter her theory, he insisted that she chain him to a tree at night and stay with him to see if he truly is the wolf, and in order to make sure her Granny doesn't know she's gone, Red had her best-friend Snow White wear her Red Cloak in her bed. Since Red was not wearing her cloak that night, she transformed into a wolf then murdered and ate her chained up boyfriend. Following the event, Granny confessed to Red that she was a werewolf.

Television specials

Characters from the franchise have been featured in television specials. The first, Our Unsung Villains, was aired in 1956 as part of Walt Disney Presents. In the special, Walt Disney himself hands duties over the Evil Queen's Magic Mirror, who hosts a show devoted to Disney Villains such as the Big Bad Wolf, the Evil Queen and Captain Hook, along with Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear. In 1977, there was an update to this show, titled Disney's Greatest Villains, that featured the Evil Queen and Captain Hook again, along with eight other characters from the franchise, plus Madame Mim and Willie the Giant. Segments from this special were featured in A Disney Halloween. In Disney on Parade, the magic mirror conjures up 4 villains: Stromboli, the Big Bad Wolf, the Old Hag, and Cruella de Vil.

Disney Villains

• the Evil Queen: In the show, the Evil Queen is named Regina and was the daughter of a wealthy witch named Cora, who forced her into an arranged marriage with the king of the land. Regina, however, only wanted to marry her true love: a poor stable-boy named Daniel. As a monarch, Regina was a brutal and tyrannical leader prompting the citizens of the kingdom to deem her "the Evil Queen." Realizing her life was in danger, Snow White fled her home and became an outlaw prompting Regina to deem her the most wanted criminal in the kingdom and after years of hunting her down, managed to blackmail her into consuming a cursed apple, which would trap her in a hellish sleep dimension for eternity by threatening the love of her life, the Prince. Snow was awoken by true love's kiss, and Regina was subsequently overthrown and banished. Regina got her revenge by placing a curse on the kingdom that transported its inhabitants to the realm without magic where their memories were replaced with fake ones and they were all unknowingly trapped in the timeless town of Storybrooke in, which Regina was mayor. In the town, Regina adopted a baby named Henry, who she cared for more than anything and prompted her to learn to become a better person, even after she learned that he was the abandoned biological son of Snow White's daughter who grew to become her greatest rival and closest friend as she tried to redeem and improve herself.
• Captain Hook: In Once Upon a Time, Captain Hook is the alias of a pirate captain named Killian Jones who originally served as a Navy Officer alongside his brother. On one mission, the two brothers were sent to the alternate realm of Neverland in order to retrieve a plant, which the king claimed would cure all illnesses and heal all wound. On the island, however, Killian's brother used the herb on himself only to discover that it was a lethal poison, which the king intended to use for warfare. After Killian's brother died, he chose to renounce his king and become a pirate, convincing his crew to do the same. As a pirate, he fell in love with a woman named Milah, who was trapped in an unhappy marriage with a cowardly peasant named Rumplestiltskin with whom she had a child. Killian and Milah ran away together, only to be find themselves confronted by Milah's husband several years later. Over the time they were gone, Rumpelstiltskin had learned black magic and became known as the Dark One. Believing that Killian had killed Milah, the all-powerful Rumplestiltskin challenged the Captain to a duel, only for the battle to be interrupted by Milah to confessed to Rumple that she left with Killian willingly because of how much she hated Rumple.
• The Queen of Hearts
• The Big Bad Wolf/The Wolf: In Once Upon a Time, the characters of the Big Bad Wolf, the Wolf from "Peter and the Wolf," and Little Red Riding Hood are all combined into one character. This version of the character is named Redd Lucas and is the daughter of the leader of a pack of werewolves. But she was hidden away from her mother by her grandmother, who was a werewolf cured of her curse. Red's grandmother didn't trust the child to be raised by her mother knowing that she was evil and so she moved to a snowy forest village to raise Red and acquired an enchanted red cloak, which would prevent Red from transforming into a werewolf whenever she wore it. Throughout the days that followed, Red began to believe that the werewolf was actually her boyfriend Peter, because she noticed wolf prints in the snow outside her house, which slowly transform into human prints on one of the nights that Peter spent the night with her. After telling Peter her theory, he insisted that she chain him to a tree at night and stay with him to see if he truly is the wolf, and in order to make sure her Granny doesn't know she's gone, Red had her best friend Snow White wear her red cloak in her bed. Since Red was not wearing her cloak that night, she transformed into a wolf then murdered and ate her chained-up boyfriend. Following the event, Granny confessed to Red that she was a werewolf and that it ran in their family.

• Finale Unit: The mischievous Disney Villains appear out of the darkness like Ursula, the Queen of Hearts, Captain Hook and Governor Ratcliffe, Lady Tremaine, Drizella, and Anastasia ready to stir up some trouble. A dark and dungeon-like lair takes over the parade route, bringing with it a wicked gathering of villainy such as Maleficent in her dragon form, Hades, Cruella de Vil, the Evil Queen, Jafar, Frollo, and Gaston.

Secret Villains

Disney Villains proved their mark in cinematic history when the American Film Institute named The Queen as the 10th greatest movie villain of all time. Other Disney Villains on AFI's list were Bambi's Hunter and Cruella de Vil. The AFI did not rely on Disney's classification of who qualified as a villain, but used this definition instead: a "villain" was defined as a character whose wickedness of mind, selfishness of character and will to power are sometimes masked by beauty and nobility, while others may rage unmasked. They can be horribly evil or grandiosely funny, but are ultimately tragic.

Trivia

• According to some, Jafar is considered the most powerful Disney villain, had he been able to keep his Genie powers. But Hades, due to his status as a god, would likely be considered the most powerful Disney villain.
• Almost all Disney Villains wear mostly red, black, and purple. By contrast, white, blue, and gold are the traditional "good" colors.
• Most villains appear to have either green, yellow, or black (no iris) eyes.
• Green eyes were considered to be a sign of either magic, evil and/or witchcraft during the Middle Ages, yellow eyes are often common in animals but not humans, and villains' eyes are generally smaller than those of heroic characters.
• Occasionally, there are villains with blue eyes (Gaston), brown eyes (Stromboli, Jafar, King Candy), gray eyes (Ursula, Mother Gothel), or violet/purple eyes (Vanessa, Doctor "The Shadow Man" Facilier).
• Conversely, some heroic characters like Esmeralda and Rapunzel are depicted with green eyes. In fact, Esmeralda actually started the green-eyed protagonist trend.
• If not counting Sid Phillips from Toy Story (due to the fact he grew up, as implied in Toy Story 3), Gaston from Beauty and the Beast and Hans from Frozen are currently the youngest Disney Villains to date, with Hans being 23 and Gaston being around his mid-20s.
• Scar from The Lion King and Hades from Hercules are currently the only Disney Villains to be related to the main protagonist of the movie. Scar is Simba's uncle, and Hades is technically Herc's uncle.
• The Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Lady Tremaine from Cinderella, and Mother Gothel from Tangled don't count because they aren't biologically related to the protagonists of their respective films.
• Ursula from The Little Mermaid was originally intended to be Ariel's aunt, Belle was originally going to have an aunt named Marguerite (Maurice's sister) as her film's antagonist, and Elsa from Frozen, the older sister of Anna, was originally intended to be the main antagonist (she is far less antagonistic and more redeemable in the actual film) until Hans was created.
• Interestingly enough, Ursula actually has her own sister, named Morgana, and Hans has at least twelve older brothers. Both villains have strained relationships with their respective siblings.
• In the novel Tarzan of the Apes, Clayton was Tarzan's biological cousin. It is questionable, if it's true in the Disney universe, as Tarzan's true name is never revealed. However, it could be possible, as both Tarzan and Clayton share some facial similarities.
• Edgar Balthazar from The Aristocats seems to have more morality than most Disney Villains. When he was getting rid of Duchess and her kittens, he could've just killed them, but he chose to abandon them in the woods.
• Governor Ratcliffe from Pocahontas is the only Disney Villain to be based on an actual person.
• Hades is presumably the oldest of the Disney Villains, being an immortal god. Mother Gothel from Tangled, while she's not immortal, is presumably the oldest human Disney Villain.
• Gaston, Jafar, and Judge Claude Frollo are currently the only three male Disney Villains to have an obsession with the female lead of their respective films (Belle for Gaston, Jasmine for Jafar, and Esmeralda for Frollo).
• In deleted versions of The Lion King, Scar was to fall into lust with Nala at one point.
• Maleficent's currently the only Disney Villain who serves as the main protagonist of their own feature film.
• Both Iago and Kronk have led their own direct-to-video features in The Return of Jafar and Kronk's New Groove, respectively.
• Claude Frollo is the first Disney Villain to claim to be virtuous, despite the great cruelty of his actions. While other Villains have pretended to be good, Frollo is the only villain who actually believes they are on the side of good.
• King Candy is the only Disney Villain whose appearance was designed to specifically resemble a Disney protagonist, that being the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland. Also, despite being credited as one of Disney's funniest villains, he's also one of Disney's darkest villains.
• Captain Hook from Peter Pan is the only villain to be a part in the Disney Adventurers line-up.
• Dr. Facilier from The Princess and the Frog is the fourth Disney character to have violet or purple eyes, the first three being Princess Aurora, Vanessa and Megara (all of whom are women), the second villain after Vanessa, and the only male character to have violet or purple eyes.
• He's the first black Disney Villain.
• He's the first Disney Villain to not have a big introduction into the film, as he first appears in the opening song in a casual way.
• He's the fourth Disney Villain to be French or be of French origin.
• Hans is the first Disney Villain to be a love interest to a Disney Hero/Heroine. However, it might not count, since Hans never really loved Princess Anna in the first place, and Anna's interest in Hans was more like a naïve infatuation than actual love.
• Ursula, Scar, and Hades are the only Disney Villains to have known siblings (Morgana, Mufasa, Poseidon, and Zeus). While Mufasa, Poseidon, and Zeus were good guys and served as supporting characters of their films, Morgana was the central villain of The Little Mermaid: Return to the Sea and is the only female sibling of a villain.
• Prince Hans also has known siblings, but his brothers are never seen on screen like the previously listed villain siblings.
• Clayton has a sister named Lady Waltham. However, unlike most Disney Villains siblings, her only appearance was in The Legend of Tarzan television series, rather than a direct-to-video sequel, albeit still in sequel media.
• Jafar has a sister named Nasira. However, she might not count as canon, as her only appearance was in Disney's Aladdin in the episode "Nasira's Revenge."
• Of the eleven primary members of the franchise, only five are known to have truly died during their film: Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Ursula, Scar, and Dr. Facilier. Jafar is killed in the sequel to Aladdin. Cruella, Hook, and the Queen of Hearts survive all their films. Hades' fate is left uncertain, as he is sucked into the River Styx; as he himself said, only a god can survive the River Styx.
• King Candy is the latest Disney villain to actually die.
• Most of the better known villains have a song sung by them (Ursula, Captain Hook, Scar, Dr. Facilier, Gaston, Mother Gothel, Frollo, and Governor Radcliffe) or about them (Cruella, Gaston, and Captain Hook). Gaston and Hook are the only ones to have a singing part in the song about them ("Gaston" and "The Elegant Captain Hook," respectively).
• Additionally, themes or recurring musical scores that represented several villains in a prior scene(s) has notably played in the underscore moments before or during their final defeat. These villains include the Evil Queen, Captain Hook, Maleficent, Ursula, Scar, Judge Frollo, Hades, Dr. Facilier, Mother Gothel, King Candy, and Yokai.
• Music plays a significant part in the role of a Disney Villain. Villains engaging in song and dance traces all the way back to 1940's Pinocchio, with Honest John's "Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee", though the staple was truly popularized as a centerpiece of a Disney animated musical with Ursula's "Poor Unfortunate Souls" in 1989. However, whether they perform a song or not, villains are commonly represented by an instrumental theme that plays in the score during most of their scenes. These villains include: the Evil Queen, Chernabog, Captain Hook, Maleficent, Ursula, Gaston, Jafar, Oogie Boogie, Scar, Judge Frollo, Hades, Yzma, Dr. Facilier, Mother Gothel, King Candy, Hans, Yokai, and Tamatoa.
• Scar, Clayton, Man, Dr. Facilier, and Yokai are the only villains to permanently kill off a major character in their respective films.
• An argument could be made for the Headless Horseman, who possibly killed Ichabod Crane when the former spirited the latter away. However, Ichabod's final fate was left ambiguous.
